Distinct but Not Separate
This is not abstract theology. It’s the heartbeat of our salvation!
Welcome back to our Transformational Theology video series about the triunity of God. Check out the corresponding book here, as well as more transformational designs.
The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are not separate, but they are distinct — three Persons in perfect unity. Because of this, they have existed in self-giving love and joyful fellowship for all eternity.
God didn’t create the world because He was lonely. He already lived in perfect relationship!
“Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.” (John 17:24)
And now, through Jesus, we are invited into that very fellowship, into the shared life of the Trinity.
“... indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.” (1 John 1:3)
You were made not just to know about God, but to be drawn into His love, forever.
How does this transform us?
The unity and different roles of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are pictured beautifully in marriage. We should celebrate unity and distinction in our marriages! Husbands and wives have equal standing and value, as well as distinct roles.
But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the Head of Christ is God. (1 Corinthians 11:3)
If possible, contact an older couple with a strong and healthy marriage and ask them about their experiences with unity and distinction in their own marriages. Even if you aren’t married, their experiences can help you understand the character of God better.
Here are a few questions you could ask:
How have you worked out your different roles in the marriage?
What challenges did you encounter?
How did God work through those experiences to bring you both into deeper fellowship with Him, and deeper union with each other?
Ask the couple to pray over you (and your marriage if you are married), then pray for them — that they would be powerfully united to God and each other, and used by God to bring many people to Him!
In the coming days, look for ways to bless married couples you know with encouragement and prayer.
